Yes. The Spalding Method is accredited by IMSLEC and IDA.

How much time in a school day would need to be set aside to teach WRTR?

At first, more time will be spent in the spelling element because that is where children learn to read. Your school needs to set aside 90-120 minutes for teaching spelling, writing, and reading each day. As you become more established and routines are in place, you may only need 90 minutes.

How does The Writing Road to Reading meet State Standards for spelling/phonics, writing, and reading?

A correlation to the College and Career Ready Standards can be provided to you at your request. Contact Us. We can also provide you with a reverse K-3 alignment that Spalding has done with the Arizona State Standards. These grades are closely aligned within 90-99% alignment to the Arizona State Standards. Although, Spalding has not done a complete alignment to all states, we have found that many states require the same or similar skills to be taught in spelling/phonics, writing, and reading.

How does Spalding improve fluency?

Each day, after dictation of new words, these words are read two ways: for spelling and for reading. When they read one-syllable dictated words for spelling, they say each sound to train the brain to process sounds sequentially for writing and spelling. When they read multi-syllable words, they say each syllable. Next they read the words for "reading." They read each word in normal speech as they will when reading in a book. Research has documented that the best comprehenders by the end of second-grade were the best on rapid single-word reading at the end of first grade. This is a strength of Spalding.

How do I use Spalding in multi-grade classrooms?

If the students have already had Spalding, pretest to determine which phonograms they know. If none of the students have had prior Spalding training, then begin at the beginning with all students. All phonics training is done in the spelling lesson. The phonograms are taught with handwriting, and all students begin with manuscript. When 54 phonograms are learned, begin spelling dictation. Be sure to pretest, using the Spalding Spelling Assessment to determine where to begin dictation for the older students. Again, if they have never had Spalding, they may start at the beginning, Section A-G, but the pace is more rapid.
